Itinerary
The following is a brief description of the trip, a fuller account with a photo
gallery of the Karkur Talh rock art sites will be coming soon.
Day 1. - Cairo - Camp at dunes South West of Abu Mungar
Day 2. - Camp - Dakhla - East Uweinat (New artesian water based agricultural
development scheme and town 50 km south of Bir Terfawi, end of tarmac road)
Day 3. - East Uweinat - accross Selima Sand Sheet - Jebel Kamil - Camp
before "Eight Bells"
Day 4. - Camp - "Eight Bells" - Wadi Wassa - "Shaw's Cave"
(Rock art site discovered by W.B.K.Shaw in 1935) - Wadi Firaq - Jebel Jebel Uweinat,
camp indise Karkur Talh
Day 5. - Walk to Karkur Talh rock art sites liying in Sudan.
Day 6. - Return to Karkur Talh rock art sites with vehicle, visit sites
lying farther up the valley - Clayton's Craters
Day 7. - Craters - Prince Kemal el Din monument (erected by Almasy in 1933)
- Wadi Sora in north western Gilf Kebir
Day 8. - Wadi Sora - ascending el 'Aqaba pass - camp in the middle of the
rift of the Gilf.
Day 9. - Camp - Wadi Hamra accross dune range in 'Gap'
Day 10. - Wadi Hamra, walk over accross plateau top to Eastern Branch of
Wadi Abd-el-Melik
Day 11. - Wadi Hamra - Silica Glass area
Day 12. - Silica Glass area - Camp in Sand Sea west of SG
Day 13. - Camp - exit Sand Sea south eastwards to NE tip of the Gilf Kebir
- continue towards Abu Ballas
Day 14. - Abu Ballas - Dakhla (camp beside Jebel Edmondstone)
Day 15. - Dakhla - Farafra - camp in White Desert
Day 16. - Farafra - Baharya - Cairo
